Chapter 9: … Someone Like Me As A Member

@princess-of-france personally I thought their Henriad was all right but had a lot of problems with their War of the Roses. I should probably start with what I liked: Margaret and Henry. They were both wonderful and really brought those characters to life for me; Margaret especially has the best facial expressions and she had a good balance between being tough but also sympathetic.
I had a lot of criticisms when I watched it but my biggest beef is with Richard. They had him sitting out of the fighting until after York is killed, and to me his father’s praise for his fighting prowess and their connection is an important part of his character. They moved a lot of his lines around, partially because it was condensed, but also when you move his big speech in 3.2 to when he’s on his way to the Tower to kill Henry it kind of comes out of nowhere. When it’s where it’s supposed to be it makes more sense because now that peace has seemingly been reached and York is dead there’s not much for Richard to do anywhere so he has to set his sights higher - though he has already said something like “do but think how sweet it is to wear the crown…within its circuit lies Elysium, and all that poets feign of bliss or joy.”
They make him timid at first and seemingly unsuited to war in terms of personality, at least while he’s still getting the hang of it, and I just don’t think that works.
And they gave away his lines about Somerset’s head.
And I didn’t like how they did the Tower scene. I don’t want to see Richard angry or gleeful, not after Henry’s said his big speech, I want to see him lose control emotionally and break down under the weight of a deep sadness. I have yet to actually see that but I’ve only ever watched one other production.
I gave up after 1.2 of Richard III because the way they did that whole scene made absolutely no sense to me.
But that’s just me. Sorry for the long answer; what did you think of it? What did you like or dislike, and was it like how you imagined the scenes playing out when you read it?
will olaf and minions ever end. will i be forced to live the rest of my life occasionally seeing olaf and minions
Said the Baudelaire children.
Today I called a girl homophobic as a joke and she almost started crying
She said “my neighbors are a lesbian couple! I’m the least homophobic person you’ll ever meet”
I said “Kelsea I’m really sorry I hurt your feelings but I need you to know that homophobic people can have lesbian neighbors” and she just got even more distraught and said “I’ve been inside their house and I wasn’t even afraid or anything”
AFRAID OF WHAT??
I hate this idea people have that if a parent walks in and turns off the tv while their kids are watching or playing something it’s evidence of some unhealthy attachment or addiction to technology if they get pissed off. If you walk up and slap a book out of my hand while I’m reading I’m going to have the same reaction, fuck off you’re not making some great social commentary you’re just being an ass hole.
If you slap a sandwich out of my hands and I get pissed it doesn’t mean I’m addicted to eating it just means I was enjoying something and then you had to be an asshole lmao
“millenials are so stupid, they can’t perform basic life skills” cries the generation that failed to teach their children basic life skills
also a lot of those practical skills were taught in classes like home ec that have been cut completely as schools slash all spending not related to sports and STEM
relatedly, my all-time favourite translation note concerning a single word
Yo,
Also known as the exact moment I feel for Heaney’s BEOWULF.
You know. From the first word.
For me it was “thole” in the forward, before I even got to the text of the translation …

Both of these excerpts are from Heaney’s forward to the Norton edition.
I love new players. They dont know the rules, which you might be scared about. Not knowing the rules makes people think outside them.
New players dont know the clichés, they really think outside the box, and they’re consistently creative.
Dont be intimidated by the rules, be excited to try and break them.
alright. controversy time. what’s the best flavor pairing to go with chocolate. my votes go toward raspberry or coffee

ok so i reread this
definitely not crying
I hope y’all don’t mind if I add one:

“The moral of the story is that if you’re gender non-binary: you’re magic, Ishtar loves you, and even the queen of Hell thinks you’re hot.”
Is that last one in reference to one of my favorite myths, Ishtar’s Descent into the Underworld???

Okay I actually am pretty confident about this one, but I have seen exactly 0 total episodes so here we go:
Basically, four people die and end up in the Afterlife where they are subjected to a bunch of nonsense and random tests that teach them moral lessons. Also they can’t swear I guess. The four people are as follows:
Eleanor: Basically she is very self-centered and manipulative but she had to learn to do that because of her family situation and the way she grew up, with her mother being neglectful and stuff. Everyone is in the Bad Place not cause they’re bad people but because they had life circumstances that were out of their control.
Chidi: He was an ethics professor and I think he had social anxiety so was never able to actually do The Right Thing despite knowing right from wrong because it was his field
Tahani: Is very superficial and vain. I think she was an actress or something? And she I guess had a sister who was always better than her at everything so she lies to seem cool
I can’t remember the last guy’s name, I think it’s something really basic like Joe but I’m probably wrong: As far as I can tell he was just never given any proper moral structure or education and was taught to do crimes and so grew up doing crimes without… knowing it was bad? At all?
Also there’s the Devil or maybe he’s just a demon, and his name is Michael (?) and he’s like their guardian or something. I think he gets some kind of character arc where he learns to care about these guys and make friends.
There’s also Janet, who is an AI and is not a woman, or a robot. She shows up in a lot of memes and I think at one point they murder her, probably for a reason.
I think Marc Evan Jackson also plays another demon (or maybe the Devil…?) but I’m not 100% about that, I may have been thinking about another show.
That’s pretty spot on! I mean, tweak a few details here and there and you’ve got it.
The guy’s name is Jason. Jason is…from Florida. He’s a Florida man.
And yeah that is Marc Evan Jackson. He is also on Brooklyn Nine Nine so you could also be thinking about that.
